As parents, we often focus on food, screen time, and routines when it comes to our children’s behavior. But what if something you can’t see or smell was also influencing their mood, focus, or even sleep? The truth is, many common household products contain toxins that can subtly but significantly affect a child’s nervous system.
Here are 5 everyday toxins found in many homes — and what you can do to protect your family.
1. Phthalates – found in fragranced products like air fresheners, laundry detergents, candles, shampoos, and body sprays to name a few. This chemical can interfere with hormones and cause behavioral issues and problems with attention span in children. It’s best to choose products that are plant-based or that use pure essential oils as fragrance. Avoid national brand plug-ins and air fresheners.
2. BPA and other plastics – these chemicals are found in plastic water bottles, plastic food containers, toys, canned food linings, and other plastic items. BPA (bisphenol-A) is an endocrine disruptor that may mimic estrogen in the body, potentially affecting mood, memory, and focus. It’s always best to look for BPA-free labels or switch to glass or stainless steel containers.
3. Ammonia, Bleach, VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) – these chemicals are found in multipurpose sprays, disinfectants, window cleaners, oven cleaners. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and harsh cleaners can irritate the lungs and may contribute to mood swings, irritability, or brain fog. It’s best to use non-toxic, plant-based cleaners or DIY alternatives like vinegar and baking soda. Always ventilate while cleaning. I personally detest the smell of vinegar, but to each their own.
4. Triclosan – a chemical found in some toothpastes, mouthwashes, deodorants, shaving gels, and other personal care products. Triclosan is known to act as an endocrine disruptor, meaning it can interfere with hormone systems. It has been shown to affect thyroid hormone levels, which are crucial for brain development and metabolism—especially in children. It may also impact estrogen and testosterone balance, potentially affecting puberty and reproductive development. It’s best to opt for plant-based versions of these products.
5. Parabens are a group of synthetic chemicals commonly used as preservatives in many everyday products to prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast. While they help extend shelf life, parabens can be absorbed through the skin and have raised concerns due to their potential to disrupt hormones and affect health over time. It’s best to opt for plant-based versions of these products.
The USA bans only 10-12 of these types of chemicals in our everyday products, whereas countries like Europe ban over 1400 of them! It’s crazy!
But it’s no wonder so many people have skin conditions, allergies, asthma, and other issues. It’s coming from the things we’re putting in and on our bodies.
It doesn’t have to be this way, but the giant conglomerates have only one concern in mind when making these products – profit.
I ecourage you to do your own research and find options that best suit your family’s needs and budget.
