This works with 99% of other situations as well:
Examples:
What to wear to school:
Lay out two outfits – no other options. Let them choose the two outfits and then let them decide between the two when the time calls for it.
What to have for snack:
You can have an apple or a banana. No other options.
When to clean their room:
You can clean it now and get to watch 30 minutes of your favorite show, or you can clean it later but not have any TV time today.
Behavior:
You can stop screaming at me so we can talk about the problem and come up with a solution together, or you can go in your room and think about it for a while.
All of these situations teach problem solving while giving the child autonomy – the freedom to decide. You as the parent simply create safe boundaries and prevent overwhelm by limiting the options.
